Chinese New Year

Before Chinese New Year, we carry out spring cleaning to get rid of bad luck and to welcome the new and dispose of the old.

During Chinese New Year, the chinese family will eat a vegetarian dish called 'zai'. The various ingredients in 'zai' are vegetables.

Whenever we visit houses of our friends and relatives, we bring a bag of mandarin oranges to give to our relatives, friends and their parents. We greet them by saying 'gong xi fa cai' or 'wan shi ru yi' and 'sheng ti jian kang'. Upon hearing these well wishes, they will give us red packets which contain money - one of the things we found appealing :p

In Mandarin, the New Year's Eve is called 'nian chu xi' . The first day is called 'chu yi' and it is the busiest day of the new year. The last day of Chinese New Year is known as 'yuan xiao jie' and the Chinese celebrate it by having a reunion and eating 'tang yuan' .
